In the weeks after Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, new polls suggests there has been a shift in the minds among the African-American community. Some political experts felt Obama’s support of gay marriage would create a backlash among black voters, but a recent poll conducted by The Washington Post and ABC shows 59% of blacks support gay marriage, an 18% increase since the President’s endorsement.

The National Organization for Marriage, a group who is against gay marriage, doubted the validity of the poll. Its political director Frank Schubert told The Post:

“There is not a chance in God’s green earth that African Americans support same-sex marriage,” he said, drawing from his experience organizing anti-same-sex marriage campaigns in California, Iowa, Maine and North Carolina. The president’s endorsement has likely “created a lot of angst and conflict in that community, but his opinion of same-sex marriage is not going to be changing the opinion of African Americans in a significant way.”
